Making big progress
Hey everyone!
It's been about 12 days since I've started working on this game, and almost 10 days since the last devlog on here. There haven't even been any new videos on YouTube... What's going on?
Okay, long story short, last time I said I'd implement the cards so the gameplay is more than just Russian roulette. I've added 15 new cards... And the enemy AI... Oh and shield and "SUDDEN DEATH" mechanic. Okay yeah this might've gone out of hand. Let's dial it back a bit and go over one at a time.
THE CARDS:
So this was the whole idea behind the game. I knew I wanted to make a Russian roulette style game but with a spin on it. A way to strategically put yourself at an advantage, or to be put at a disadvantage by your opponents if you don't play carefully. I didn't really plan the cards ahead of time, I just kind of came up with them while developing. Probably not the best way to do this but it's fine (probably.) Here's a video showing off most of the cards. Some of these have slight tweaks or will be changed in the final version, but most of these will stay the same.
You can see a bunch of the new cards and mechanics here. I had a friend play through an early version and he liked it! Not flawless, but it can definitely be ironed out and fixed pretty quick. I added a shield card because I thought instant death wouldn't be very fun, but there are a few ways for both you and your enemy to counter shields, so you shouldn't get TOO comfortable. Sudden death triggers after a set amount of rounds, or by using the card. Once it starts, shields are removed, cards are removed, and any changes you add through cards like multiple bullets or reversals will be removed. The gun is spun and the person chosen must fire at themselves, if the round is a blank, the gun is given to the other person to do the same. The cylinder in the gun isn't spun again after this so the more empty rounds fired the more dangerous it is.
THE VISUALS:
If you happen to have eyes, you might've noticed the game looks kind of... Bad to say the least. So I've moved on to working on some of the visual aspects. Models, lighting, textures, animations... Y'know, the tedious stuff. I don't want to spoil what it looks like until I'm done, so you aren't getting any videos this time, but uh... Here's a light I guess.
SO...
The next time you see me I'll hopefully have some decent graphics. This might end up being the most lengthy part of development cause I'm a bit inexperienced with this, but hey, that's what jams are for, right? I suppose that'd be it for this quick devlog. After this I should work on polishing up gameplay, adding more bosses and a tutorial, and finally sound design and fixing any bugs. See you in the next one.
